In Daniel Pink's podcast interview with Professor Steven Rogelberg (PINKCAST 3.06), he (Prof. Rogelberg) provides three practical suggestions to improve your next meeting. They are: Separation, Stand-up, and Shrinkage. My favorite is "Shrinkage."
Why? A meeting scheduled for an hour, will take an hour. Schedule a meeting for 48 minutes, it will take only 48 minutes.
This reminds me of when I lived in my one bedroom apartment in DC. I had everything I needed when I lived in that one bedroom. When I moved into my three bedroom home, within a few years, it had been all filled. In a sense, this is the hour concept.
My wife currently assists seniors moving from their homes, into one of the many assisted living facilities in the area. She helps them "downsize," from a rambler to a studio or one bedroom apartment. Since many seniors have their meals provided for them, they no longer need all of their pots, pans, etc. This is the "Shrinkage" concept.
Whenever we can, reducing some of the things in our lives, will not only free up space, but make space for the more important things in life, whether at work or at home.
